Damascus Overview

Damascus Digital Music Server is designed to be a central location for your digital music collection and a means to easily organize and listen to your digital media through your stereo, over a local network, or anywhere in the world. No more shuffling through hundreds of compact discs to find that one song you want to hear. Damascus contains a ton of great features that allow you to listen to your music anywhere at anytime.

With Damascus, you are able to listen to your music collection through your home stereo or from a remote computer anywhere in the world via the streaming capabilities. Allow friends and family to listen to your music without allowing them to download it. Damascus accomplishes all of this through an incredibly easy to use interface made possible with web standards and AJAX techniques. Damascus is available entirely for free and can be used on any Linux distribution with the Apache web server, PHP5, and MySQL database installed. Installation is simple and the requirements are minimal.

Try out the demo and if you like it, grab the download. Install it at home and blast some music all day long on the stereo. While you’re working or studying away from home, listen to your music anywhere you have broadband or wireless access.

Damascus is based on the work done by Jon Buda, who wrote mp3act. Without mp3act, there would be no Damascus.

Technical Requirements

Downloading and extracting the installation archives requires a file compression and extraction program. An excellent, free, open source program is 7-Zip; 7-Zip is compatible with most older compression algorithms, but its native 7z format offers superior compression. 7-Zip is currently available only for Windows: ports for other platforms are under development and should be available soon.
